    Description

Phoenix glass company of Philipsburg, Pennsylvania has come to be known as one of the finest art glass producers of the late 1800s here in North America. Their products are highly sought after and collected because of the striking beauty and originality of their items. The creation of this milk pitcher would have taken several steps to complete. First the molten blob would have been dipped in cold water to cause the fine fissures, then blown into form, finally reheated to cause the channeling or crackle effect in the glass. Before it cooled, the piece would then be rolled in pounded glass-pulverized glass shards to create glass sand, finally reheated again to smooth the sharpness of the applied granules. This was known as over shot glass. Over shot glass was first discovered in the 16th century in the Venice area of Italy to be used later by studios in other parts of Europe and America to create works of art. Phoenix produced pieces in limited quantities and assorted shapes and sizes. This pitcher stands 5 1/2” tall, measures 4” from spout to back of handle and approximately 4 3/4” across the widest area of the body. After thorough examination, no damage or repairs noted. The inside is clean of any staining or residue from use. I will mention and difficult to see because of the overshot/craquelle design, an interior bubble can be seen. It blends into the overshot and does not detract. Great color for an interesting example.  Please view all pictures as they are considered part of the description.
Please check back to my listings often as I will be posting numerous fine examples of glass, pottery and porcelain in the near future.
    Thank you.
